Interesting Facts About West Hempstead
Historical Significance: West Hempstead first appeared on maps as the name of a Long Island Railroad station in 1893. The area has a rich history, with several landmarks and historical sites that reflect its development over the years.
Parks and Recreation: The community is home to Halls Pond Park, which was dedicated by Nassau County in 1961. This park offers a serene environment with a pond, walking trails, and picnic areas. Another notable park is Echo Park, which features a public indoor pool and is named after the community’s first four little league teams: Eagles, Cardinals, Hawks, and Orioles.
Community Efforts: In 2001, residents of West Hempstead held a nonbinding referendum on renaming the community to Mayfair Gardens. This effort was led by the West Hempstead Civic Association and the West Hempstead Chamber of Commerce to distinguish the area from the neighboring Hempstead. However, the name West Hempstead was retained by a narrow margin.
