Interesting Facts About Wantagh, New York
Wantagh, New York, is a vibrant hamlet and census-designated place located in Nassau County on Long Island, known as “The Gateway to Jones Beach”. Originally inhabited by the Merokee tribe of Algonquin Native Americans, the area was first settled by European settlers in the 17th century, with the Jackson and Seaman families being among the earliest pioneers. The community was initially named “Jerusalem” and later changed to “Ridgewood” in the 1880s before finally being christened Wantagh in honor of the Merokee chief who lived in the area in 1647.
Throughout its history, Wantagh transformed from a rural farming community to a popular tourist destination and eventually a suburban town. The construction of the Long Island Railroad in the 1880s, the establishment of Jones Beach and Sunrise Highway in the early 20th century, and significant housing developments between the 1950s and 1970s shaped its modern character. Today, Wantagh boasts a population of approximately 18,000 residents, with a median age of 40.8 years and a strong sense of community. The area is known for its excellent recreational facilities, including Jones Beach State Park, Twin Lakes Preserve, and various parks, making it an attractive location for families and outdoor enthusiasts.
