How New Hyde Park Got Its Name

The area was originally part of an 800-acre land grant given to Thomas Dongan, the fourth royal governor of New York, in 1683.

In 1715, George Clarke, Secretary of the Province of New York, purchased the estate and named it “Hyde Park” in honor of his wife, Anne Hyde.

The name “Hyde Park” was inspired by the famous Hyde Park in London, England.

In 1871, when a post office was established in the area, the name was changed to “New Hyde Park” to avoid confusion with another Hyde Park located in the Hudson Valley.
