As of the 2020 census, Jericho had a population of 14,808.
The history of Jericho dates back to the 17th century when English Quakers settled in the area, seeking a peaceful existence as farmers. The name “Jericho” was adopted in 1692, inspired by the biblical city near the Jordan River. The Quakers played a significant role in the community’s development, establishing a Friends Meeting house in 1788 and a Quaker school in 1793. Jericho also has a rich history of social progress, with slavery being abolished in the area in 1817.
Today, Jericho is a vibrant community with excellent schools, including the Jericho Union Free School District and the Syosset Central School District.
