Origin of Inwood’s Name
Inwood, New York, derived its name through a series of historical changes and community decisions:
- Early Name: Initially known as North West Point (mid-17th century)
- Later Name: Called Westville after the American Civil War
- Final Name Change: Became Inwood in December 1888
Reason for the Change
The transition to “Inwood” occurred when residents sought to establish a post office. The U.S. Postal Service required a unique name because a Westville post office already existed in New York State.
Selection Process
- Residents voted on several proposed names
- Options included Bayhead and Springhaven
- “Inwood” emerged as the preferred choice
- The new post office officially opened on February 25, 1889
Origin of “Inwood”
The exact origin of the name “Inwood” is unclear. Some sources suggest it was chosen for its aesthetic appeal, replacing the less flattering “Tubby Hook,” which had been used before 1864.
The name change reflects the community’s desire for modernization and marks Inwood’s evolution into a recognized community.
